When it comes time to be in front of the camera I find it hard for me to not get stage fright. So I found it a little easier for me to be less shy to have scripts of what I was going to say in front of me. Well not exactly in front of me but sort of like someone who is doing a news report would have in a distance just for reference. I feel that being able to know what to say at all times makes it easier to not panic while recording. In addition you don’t stutter and get thrown off tract of what your message is suppose to be about. I know from my own experience that when I stutter while recording anything I become even more nervous and it takes a while to get back on the right path that I need to be on to deliver my point in my recording or even in a speech. That is why when recording for our video in review my group member and I made big signs with what we were to say next on it. Before when we recorded we both sort of stuttered trying to figure out what to say next. That’s when we came up with using these signs almost as oversized flashcards you could say. This technique really does work! So I suggest that if you are having trouble learning your lines or have trouble focusing in front of the camera to make giant signs with your lines on it and holding it up to use as a reference and to rely on.

When it came time to record our video we went to the digital commons studio. When we were there we used a camera, and Gia and I took turns filming one another. We also came up with an idea to take big sheets of paper and write what were going to say on it and held it up for the other person to see while they were being recorded. We did this so we wouldn’t forget what we were going to say, and so that we knew what to say next. I found that remembering my lines without the script that we made was quite difficult and frustrating. After filming we took our video into the digital commons editing room and we tried uploading our video to edit, but we couldn’t upload it onto the Mac computer. After not being able to upload it onto the computer we decided that we would have to redo the whole recording with a different camera another day. When the day came that we both were able to meet and redo the recording everything went successful and we decided to use a friend’s Mac computer so that we would have more time editing the film and fitting our PowerPoint into the video as well. All in all I felt that the hardest part of this assignment was figuring out how to operate the equipment in order to film our video. I had no experience and didn’t realize all the steps that were involved in making a simple 5-10 minute video. This was definitely an educational experience. My final project that I was to do for English 015 was to create a film about the year 1969. However, to make this assignment a little easier we were assigned to groups according to the years that we (my English 015 class) chose to examine for the semester. My group consisted of myself and another girl (Gia) in my class. Together we planned out what our film would include in it that would help sum up important events in 1969. The easiest way for us to gather information was to use PowerPoint with different slides about different topics. We also decided that we would video record ourselves as the introduction and the conclusion of our short film. The main point that we wanted to present in our film was that 1969 truly was “The Generation That Never Got Old.” The film itself was to be between 5-10 minutes and was to be uploaded to YouTube. Another requirement was that every member of our group was to appear at some point on the video that we created. Furthermore transitions were also supposed to appear throughout the film as well, and there needed to be music or other live video of events that actually happened. Due to the fact that in the beginning of the assignment my group did consist of three members until the one dropped out my group was given the choice of making our video a little shorter than others because it was last minute. Although we have less members than we originally started with myself and my group member both feel that we can provide enough useful and educational information about the year 1969. Before I started anything for the image analysis assignment I decided on what I was going to analysis. After coming up with an idea to analysis the popular television show The Brady Bunch I then picked out a specific episode that I wanted to focus on. That episode that I picked out to examine was “Dear Libby” the second episode from the first season. My next step was to find some scholarly articles from the Penn State’s library search engine on the computer. I came across three that caught my attention and those were: “Best of the Bunch,” “Sexual Contention and Conformity in the Family Sitcom,” and “A Wildly Successful Bunch.” Since I knew I had three articles I decided to turn to the internet for other references and they were from the following internet sites: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0531083, When I started looking for information on what episode to analysis I had an idea of what I was looking for in the episode that I would chose. In specific I knew that I wanted to be able to relate the message of the episode to real life situations that most people would understand. So it didn’t take me long to come across “Dear Libby.” “Dear Libby” was the second episode in the first season of The Brady Bunch. In this episode that children faced the issue that one of their parents were not happy with their living situations having six children. Well at least this is what the children “thought” after reading an article in the newspaper called “Dear Libby.” I thought that many people could relate to this because of the feeling of having a new mother or father in their life, and then later finding out that their new parent didn’t want to be part of the family because of the child. All children want to be loved and accepted by their new parent and this is why I chose this particular episode. I also figured that I could analysis the children’s reactions around the home better because they would want to act differently because of the fear of upsetting their parents. For my image analysis I decided to focus on the hit television show The Brady Bunch which first aired in 1969. I chose to analysis The Brady Bunch because it’s still to this day a popular well-known television and you can still find it on certain television stations. The Brady Bunch also has a lot of specific events that happen that reflect back on the year 1969. One that really stuck out that I knew really had to do a lot with 1969 was the “housewife.” Carol the mother stayed at home and did not have a job it was Mike the father who provided for the family. The basic image that the television show displayed such as the clothing and grammar the characters used all played an important role of bringing 1969 to life on television for America to relate to. The research that I did do on The Brady Bunch the more I discovered that the television show had the largest impact on the younger audience rather than adults. However I think I can speak for everyone when it comes to The Brady Bunch we can almost all say we watched and somehow we could relate to them even in a different year. Before I began researching information for the cultural artifact I reviewed my requirements that I needed to include in this particular assignment. I looked over the purpose first and I thought of some of the important questions that weren’t obvious that I should include in webpage that my readers would find interesting about the Docuteller ATM. After finding information that I wanted to incorporate in my webpage I started researching. Reasoning and Content was the next item that I need to add to my webpage. In specific was pictures that would help the readers relate the pictures to my cultural artifact. In addition to pictures that I added in my web page I also uploaded a video from YouTube of an early version of the ATM. For my organization of my webpage I tried to use a balance of text and pictures to make my webpage seem easier and more inviting to read. I also used a different colored font which would add character and jazz up the page as well. At the bottom of the webpage I thought it would be appropriate to put my references and suggestions for further readings of the Docuteller. Putting everything together to make my webpage about my cultural artifact was a new and interesting way for me to learn more about my year. However I found that this was a time demanding assignment but the end results paid off in the end. For the Cultural Artifact assignment I was torn between a couple of artifacts that represented 1969 that I wanted to write about. Those artifacts were the Nerf Ball, the Big Wheel, and the ATM. I knew that I would most likely not be able to meet the requirements of the assignment by writing about the Nerf Ball and the Big Wheel because I didn’t know how they described America in 1969. However I knew I could write and meet all the requirements of the assignment by choosing the ATM to write about. After choosing the ATM to represent as 1696’s cultural artifact I started researching information about the ATM. ATM was also easier for me to write about because I had mentioned and wrote about the ATM in my Year in Review essay which was my first assignment for English 015. Doing the ATM as my cultural artifact allowed me to learn more about the machine’s history that I didn’t know as well as anyone who reads my cultural artifact web page. In particular one of the interesting facts that I learned was that the ATM never used the ATM cards that we are all familiar until 1969. The name of the Docuteller ATM actually came from the company that produced the ATM is also something that I learned as well. If you can only imagine the Docuteller ATM really was another step in America’s technology in 1969. When it came time for me to put all the information together about 1969 for my Year in Review assignment I did so by importance of events. I started off of course with my introduction and that was based off of hints you are going to read about in the essay, and why 1969 is still important to us today in 2009. To me one of the most important events in 1969 was the election of President Richard Nixon. I feel that it was important because it is a President who helps maintain a functional country. Next was the importance of the Apollo 11 Mission. Without this who knows just exactly when we should set foot on the moon? Another reason is because it was America who accomplished this and it is something that all Americans should be happy and take pride in that our country managed to walk on the moon before any other country could do so. Finally Hurricane Camille was the next important event that happened in 1969. This was the worst natural disaster of the year and was one of the deadliest hurricanes to take place in America at the time. All the other facts in the essay are just about what the average person was dealing with and seeing in an everyday life. One of those was about sports like who won what. “The Brady Bunch” first aired on television in 1969, and I enjoy the television show too so I added that in my essay. Not only did I enjoy it though, but it was also one of the most watched television shows in 1969 I learned when doing research. I also had a part about an interview that I conducted with my Grandmother over the telephone. In the interview my Grandmother told stories about her life in 1969. In the conclusion I just restated important events. When it came time for me to choose my year for English 015 I knew that it was going to be a tossup between following three years, 1953, 1999, and 1969. My reasoning behind choosing 1953 was mainly because of the saying “Buy now pay later,” which we all know as the introduction to famous credit card slogan. In 1999, the West Nile Virus hit America, and that was something that I was always concerned with getting when I was younger playing outside in the summer. Finally in 1969 there were a lot of events that were happening in America like Neil Armstrong, President Nixon’s election, Hurricane Camille, and the first ATM. So when I looked back at my three choices it was obvious to me which one made the most since to use as my year, and that was 1969. When I decided on 1969 I knew that writing my Year in Review would be easy to get information about. After researching information in the beginning on 1969 I already knew possible topics to write about in my assignment. Those specific topics were going to be: President Nixon, Apollo 11 Mission, Hurricane Camille, first ATM, sport records, hit television show Brady Bunch, and an interview. I figured with all this information about 1969 it was going to be successful semester in English 015 all because I chose the right year to write about, educate others on, and to research more information on. |
