Now you all may remember Hurricane Camille which destroyed Mississippi Gulf Coast along with many other parts of the state’s mainland.” “Today is August 28th 1969 making it a week since the natural disaster and we have here with us today live interviews recorded from Mary the day before the Hurricane came.” “Now Mary first explain why you were in Mississippi.”Mary-“Well first of all I wasn’t making the drive from Florida to Mississippi just to interview people the day before a dangerous storm for nothing.” “I actually was going to stay with my mother through the storm, so that she would not be alone, and she just so happens to live 45 miles North of Pass Christian a town in Mississippi, and that is where I conducted my interviews.” “I volunteered for the radio station to conduct these interviews because I was going to Mississippi and I was going to be passing through where the Hurricane was said to hit the hardest.” “Plus it is history in the making recording these interviews.”Gary- “Well let’s play these interviews that you recorded on August 16th 1969.”(Gary and Mary getting the tape recorder and pushing play windy sounds throughout the interview part)Mary- “Good Afternoon, this is Mary from the radio station “All around the World News” on AWN123.00 FM. “Today is August 16th 1969, and is also the day before Hurricane Camille is said to hit this very part of Mississippi.” “While walking around Pass Christian I have bumped into some locals and a couple actually visiting the town, and they all very kindly agreed in being interviewed by me.” “So here is the first person.” “Please tell me your name?” “Are you a local?”Susan- “Hello there my name is Susan.” “Yes my family and I are all locals here in Pass Christian.”Mary- “Hello Susan, I see that you and your family are getting ready to leave Pass Christian before the storm hits.” “Just where exactly do you plan to go with your family?” “Do you plan on coming back to Pass Christian anytime again after the storm?”Susan- “My family and I are heading to Kansas to stay with my family.” “We are hoping that we can make it out of Pass Christian and any other dangerous part of Mississippi as quickly as we can before the storm actually hits even if it means driving all night.” “Of course, we will be coming back to Pass Christian my family and I love it here so much, but we won’t return until we know it is safe for us which might mean staying in Kansas for weeks or even months.”Mary- “Thank you Susan then you and your family best be getting on your journey to Kansas, and drive safely and good luck to you!”Susan- “Thanks and you too!”Mary- “Well the next person that I see is a man hammering ply wood over his windows.” “Let’s have a quick interview with him now.” “Excuse me sir, would you please tell me your name, and if you are a local here?”Paul- “My name is Paul.” “I am a local here in Pass Christian, and this here is my store.”Mary- “Hello Paul!” “Why are you hammering ply wood to your store, and where do you plan on staying during the Hurricane?”Paul- “I am hammering up the windows and doors so that no debris destroys, or comes into my store.” “That’s because to answer your second question I am staying in here with my family during the storm.” “See this building is all brick and there is also a cellar where my family and I or anyone who needs shelter will be safe, and of course there is tons of food and water here as well.”Mary- “You sure sound like you have everything under control and you are doing a generous act to those who need a place to stay as well, so thank you and good luck to you and your family.”Paul- “Same to you miss.”Mary- “Over there is a couple with a map in their hands let’s go have a talk with them.” “Excuse me can I have a quick interview with you folks?”Leigh- “Sure I am Leigh and this is my husband Mike.”Mary- “Hello Leigh and Mike are you locals here at Pass Christian?” “Where do you plan on going when the storm hits?”Mike- “Well we were actually looking at houses for sale when we heard about the Hurricane coming, and we were panicking when that nice gentleman over there who owns the store offered to let us wait out the storm with him and his family.” Mary- “Oh yes that is Paul I just interviewed him as well.”Leigh- “Then when it is safe we are heading back to Georgia where we are from.”Mary- “Well you two be careful and I hope you find your dream house someday, and thank you for the lovely interview and good luck through the storm.”Mike- “We will and you do the same.”Mary- “Well there you have it interviews from two locals and two potential home owners here in Pass Christian Mississippi.” (Tape stops)Gary- “Wow seems like the people of Pass Christian were friendly during the crisis.”Mary- “That they were.”Gary- “Well here are the facts that came with Hurricane Camille.” “Waves we were reported to be 20 feet tall, and wind gust up to 200 mph.” “The death toll was around 255, and there were about 8,900 that were injured.” “It’s to be said that Hurricane Camille will cost Mississippi 4.2 billion dollars in damage.” Mary- “Are greatest sympathies go out to the people of Mississippi.”Gary-“That indeed they do.”
